Exhibitor profile

pakilia Silberschmuck: echt fair. echt silber. echt handarbeit.

pakilia is a young social business, run by two young women Julia Maier and Miriam Müller. The company exports handmade silver jewelry from Mexico to Germany and distributes it to German customers. pakilia is working with silver artisan families in Taxco, which is a Mexican town located between Mexico City and Acapulco in the state Guerrero, along the Southeastern coast of Mexico. pakilia is a word from the Aztecan language Náhuatl and means “to give joy to somebody”.

According to the principles of fair trade, pakilia’s partnerships are based on dialogue, transparency, and respect, contributing to more justice in international trade. pakilia accompanies the silver artisans and their families on their individual way to more professionalism, economic security as well as independence. Most of these artisan families have not had the possibility to sell their products outside the weekly silver market in Taxco. Due to poor education, to missing resources, or to a lack of knowledge in taxation and customs, they were totally dependent on the demand of the weekly market. Depending on their Saturdays’ sales, they buy new silver on Monday and produce new jewels for the next market day during the week. The high capital commitment in the silver artisan business and the highly volatile silver price are very challenging, especially for the smallest family businesses. Most families in Taxco highly depend on tourism: Taxco is a “magical village” and tourists are the most important clients on the weekly silver market. Due to the drug war problems in the Mexican state Guerrero, many tourists are staying away from the region. Silver craftsmen are affected badly by this decrease in sales.

pakilia provides new opportunities to the families. The team undertakes the whole organization from quality management to export, bearing the costs for laboratory studies of the silver, the tax load, transportation costs, as well as import duties. pakilia handles visits to the authorities and introduces the silver artisans step by step to admin-istrative tasks. Coaching improves the ability of self-organization, as well as living- and working circumstances of the artisans and their families in the long term. The artisans can become trustworthy business partners in international trade, for pakilia and others. Therefore, they have a chance to improve their life circumstances and offer better opportunities to their children.

Since June 2014, pakilia is certified by the German umbrella organization of the world shops (Weltladendachverband) as accredited supplier.
